Origin
I was conceived in Crawford Notch in a cabin.
As the story goes, there were others in the room with us that night.
It was a treacherous environment for lovin’,
But for fertility, the timing was just right.
My folks knew what they wanted, so they breached propriety,
No surprises if the act itself was a bit perfunctory
Because they must have been unsettled by the sleeping company
Reserved with radioactive core - that’s me.
I was born in Putnam, Connecticut, USA. While I started on the piano at age five at my mother’s encouragement, I was truly allured by the sax lead on songs like “Who Can It Be Now?” by Men At Work, so I took up saxophone in fifth grade. I never did figure out how to get that signature growl, but I was an enthusiastic saxophonist throughout middle school and high school, playing in concert band, marching band, jazz band, and pep band. As a senior in high school, it was suggested that I might try singing in the chorus, which was the doorway to another world of expression and contradiction. I took pride in my unique voice, which extended lower than the other basses. I also took lessons with the hope that I could become a tenor. While all that was happening, I was introduced to dazzling pieces by Chopin, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff, rekindling my interest in piano.
I went to Providence College intending to follow in my sister’s footsteps studying chemistry, but couldn’t stay away from the music building. I sang in various choral groups, played piano in the jazz band, played sax in student bands with names like Candy Bass and Wiggler, and fell short in my ability to play Chopin, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff for an audience. I graduated with a music degree in vocal performance in 1998, and had the distinction of co-establishing PC’s first student-led a cappella group, Special Guest.

I’ve been on the Rhode Island music scene since 1998, cutting my teeth first in general business bands, and then in original projects. I played keyboards in Planet Groove, an eclectic world music project from 1999 up until its evolution into Santa Mamba in 2006. I continued with Santa Mamba for the next ten years, working as keyboardist, arranger, music director, and occasional songwriter/vocalist. In 2017, I founded Romantic Ruffians, an original rock band where I co-write songs, sing lead vocals, and play keyboards. I have been performing as a solo pianist since 2007 and singer-songwriter since 2019. I was choir director at the Rehoboth Congregational Church (Rehoboth, MA) from 2011 to 2013, and currently direct the chancel choir at North Kingstown United Methodist Church.
When I’m not making music, I work as a financial adviser, play bridge and other games with my wife and family, hang around with my dog Roxy, worry about my leaky heart valve, read paper books, and ride my bike.
